Lawyers in disguise for charity
17 May 2007
Masked bandits in ball-dress? No, these are masqueraders on the right side of the law: Deacons, the international law firm, is holding a Twilight Masquerade dance on 25 May to raise money for Wesley Mission’s youth programs.
At the edges of society, where Wesley Mission finds the most urgent calls for help, are thousands of young people who are facing a dark future due to problems such as neglect and abuse, alcoholism, drugs and homelessness (the youth comprise one-third of all homeless people, emerging research shows).
Deacons will give the entire proceeds of its Twilight Masquerade 2007 function to help the Mission’s Youth Services arm. The function will take place at Le Kiosk at Shelly Beach and tickets are pitched to generate good income for the Mission’s work at $110 a head.
"We are delighted to support Wesley Mission and we thank all our sponsors, including Chivas Regal and Barons, for their generous support for our venture,” said Nick Humphrey, a Partner at Deacons.
Adding to the magic of moonlight and the surf on the 25th, at Le Kiosk, right on the beach, will be popular band Slide McBride which has a repertoire ranging from Miles Davis to Bacharach, Frankie Valli to Barry White to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Lenny Kravitz.
Deacons, which has more than 900 lawyers across Australia and Asia, takes its social responsibility obligations seriously, engaging in high levels of pro bono work for many organisations with limited resources. The firm says that its community work enriches the lives of its lawyers.
