Wesley Fair Opening

Talk about going out of our way to give the Wesley Fair a grand opening! This year, the Superintendent, Rev Keith Garner, held the opening ceremony outside the doors of the Wesley Centre, giving the passing Sydney CBD crowds a chance to see the Mission at work - and play.

Mr Ralph Norris, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank, opened the Fair and spoke about the Mission's work among needy people. Mr Norris described the voluntary work done by Commonwealth Bank workers at Edward Eagar Lodge for the homeless as one of the ways in which the bank had committed itself to back the work of the Mission.

When Keith and Mr Norris cut the ribbon in front of the main doors to declare the Fair open, the crowd outside surged in and began swooping on hot buys at the various stalls. By mid-morning the familiar "Fair" aroma of bacon-and-egg rolls was wafting through the foyer and by noon, after the auction had garnered about $3000, curry lunches and sausage sandwiches were in evidence. The items auctioned included tickets to New Zealand, hotel stays in that country and a valuable pearl necklace.
